If God Is So Good, Why Do I Hurt So Bad? : 25th Anniversary Special Edition

Description

In this powerful book, Biebel leaves behind the all-too-familiar platitudes and instead offers the unvarnished truth about the pain of illness, death, divorce, financial ruin, and more. With keen insight and a Christian outlook, Biebel puts God right by your side to help you sort through your hurt and see the value in your trials. His real-life examples and honest approach will help you turn pain into a meaningful journey toward hope and happiness. "This book saved my life," one bereaved father said. A young woman wrote, "I kept this book on my nightstand. Late at night, when I was alone and afraid, I could feel its presence hanging over me like a lightly floating sheet making me feel safe." Over the past twenty-five years, this book has brought comfort and hope to hundreds of thousands of the author's fellow pilgrims on the way of suffering. Now, this major revision is even more practical and helpful for those who hurt and those who wish to understand. In these pages you will find: - Eight essential truths about pain and healing - Questions for personal reflection or group study - Insights into relevant biblical texts and themes - A pathway toward a deeper, more personal relationship with the One who shares our sorrows, and is acquainted with our grief One of the most profound, empathetic and beautiful books ever written on the subject of suffering and loss. - Sheila Walsh In this remarkable book, my friend Dave Biebel helps the reader understand exactly what's so good about God in the midst of suffering. - Joni Eareckson Tada

Taken together, these poems offer an excellent sampling of Pope's imaginative genius and the felicitous blending of word, idea and image that earned him a place among the leading lights of 18th-century literature." This book offers an extensive guide to philosophical thinking about happiness and well-being, correcting serious misconceptions that have beset the literature. It will be a definitive resource for philosophers, social scientists, policymakers, and other students of well-being. This remarkable book presents enthralling accounts of 1001 life-changing events that have taken place around the world since the Big Bang. From the foundation of Rome on 21 April 753BCE to the Charlie Hebdo shootings in January 2015, and from the Battle of Marathon on 21 September 490BCE to the discovery of the Higgs Boson, 1001 Days That Shaped Our World tells the history of the world through extraordinary moments, decisive encounters, memorable incidents, and natural disasters. Compiled by historian, Peter Furtado, and written by an international team of historians, journalists, and scientists, The Salt Fix : Why the Experts Got it All Wrong and How Eating More Might Save Your Life download book the book features a detailed and informative account of every event, together with an assessment of the longer term physical, cultural, social or economic impact. The Salt Fix : Why the Experts Got it All Wrong and How Eating More Might Save Your Life

Description

'Dr DiNicolantonio takes us away from hype and hyperbole to a place of rationality as it relates to salt. This extensively researched text lets us finally erase the guilt all of us felt when catering to our desire for this important mineral.' David Perlmutter, MD, bestselling author of Grain Brain and The Grain Brain Whole Life Plan A leading cardiovascular research scientist upends the low-salt myth, proving that salt may be one solution to - rather than a cause of - the chronic disease crisis. We've all heard the recommendation: no more than a teaspoon of salt a day for a healthy heart. But there's one big problem with this: the majority of us don't need to watch our salt. For most, salt protects against a host of aliments, including internal starvation, insulin resistance, diabetes and heart disease - not to mention, it tastes great. Dr DiNicolantonio reveals the eye-opening story, a never-been-told, century-spanning drama of competing egos and interests, of how salt became unfairly demonised. (The real culprit? Another white crystal - sugar).Sure to change the conversation about this historically treasured substance, The Salt Fix elegantly weaves research into a fascinating new understanding of salt's essential role in your health and what happens when you aren't getting enough.Dr DiNicolantonio shows how eating the right amount of this essential mineral will help you beat sugar cravings, achieve weight loss, improve athletic performance, increase fertility and thrive with a healthy heart. Finally, he offers a transformative six-step programme for re-calibrating your innate salt thermostat so that you can simply listen to your cravings to achieve your ideal salt intake.

Maureen Carroll: Romans, Celts & Germans

Romans, Celts & Germans

Description

Dr Carroll's synthesis of past and recent archaeological research introduces readers to the main features of the Roman Empire in these provinces. It deals with the pre-Roman societies and their landscapes which were to be changed by the Romans after the conquests of Caesar and Augustus. The book also explores the concept of frontier and assesses the role of the German provinces as border zones of the Empire. Of particular interest is the interaction between Roman and native cultures as well as the ways in which ethnic and cultural identities were expressed. It also examines why Romanisation succeeded in some areas and not in others.

Dave Eggers,Tucker Nichols: This Bridge Will Not be Gray

This Bridge Will Not be Gray

Description

One of Publishers Weekly's Best Picture Books of 2015. The Golden Gate Bridge is the most famous bridge in the world. It is also, not entirely coincidentally, the world's first bright-orange bridge. But it wasn't supposed to be that way. In this book, fellow bridge-lovers Dave Eggers and Tucker Nichols tell the story of how it happened--how a bridge that some people wanted to be red and white, and some people wanted to be yellow and black, and most people wanted simply to be gray, instead became, thanks to the vision and stick-to-itiveness of a few peculiar architects, one of the most memorable man-made objects ever created. Told with playful paper cut-outs and irresistible prose, This Bridge Will Not Be Gray is a joyful history lesson in picture-book form--a gorgeously crafted story that teaches us how beauty and inspiration tend to come from the most unexpected places. Sometimes you have to fight for what you believe in, even if it's just a color.

Her memoir is both a revelatory insider s account of the Revolution and a vivid, intensely felt story about coming of This Bridge Will Not be Gray download epub age under extraordinary circumstances. Belli writes with both striking lyricism and candor about her personal and political lives: about her family, her children, the men in her life; about her poetry; about the dichotomies between her birth-right and the life she chose for herself; about the failures and triumphs of the Revolution; about her current life, divided between California (with her American husband and their children) and Nicaragua; and about her sustained and sustaining passion for her country and its people. "From the Hardcover edition."" The shattering crime story that shocked the nation: the Thomas Capano murder case On a June evening in 1996, 30-year-old Anne Marie Fahey, secretary to the governor of Delaware, vanished without a trace following a restaurant rendezvous with her secret lover of more than two years: Thomas Capano. One of Wilmington's most prominent and respected figures, a millionaire attorney and former state prosecutor, "Tommy" was a charming, softspoken family man. But in the weeks and months that followed Fahey's disappearance, investigators would gradually uncover the shocking truth: Capano was a steely manipulator driven by power and greed -- and capable of brutal murder. In a riveting narrative expertly documented by probing interviews, diary entries, and e-mail correspondence, and with superb insight into the twisted motivations of a killer, Ann Rule chronicles a real-life drama of Shakespearian proportions: ambitions fall, love turns to obsession, family names are tainted, the facade of success crumbles -- and a beautiful but vulnerable young woman pays the ultimate price in a convoluted and deadly relationship."

Language at the Speed of Sight: How We Read, Why So Many Can't, and What Can be Done About it

Description

In 2011, when an international survey reported that students in Shanghai dramatically outperformed American students in reading, math, and science, President Obama declared it a "Sputnik moment": a wake-up call about the dismal state of American education. Little has changed, however, since then: over half of our children still read at a basic level and few become highly proficient. Many American children and adults are not functionally literate, with serious consequences. Poor readers are more likely to drop out of the educational system and as adults are unable to fully participate in the workforce, adequately manage their own health care, or advance their children's education. In Language at the Speed of Sight, internationally renowned cognitive scientist Mark Seidenberg reveals the underexplored science of reading, which spans cognitive science, neurobiology, and linguistics. As Seidenberg shows, the disconnect between science and education is a major factor in America's chronic underachievement. How we teach reading places many children at risk of failure, discriminates against poorer kids, and discourages even those who could have become more successful readers. Children aren't taught basic print skills because educators cling to the disproved theory that good readers guess the words in texts, a strategy that encourages skimming instead of close reading. Interventions for children with reading disabilities are delayed because parents are mistakenly told their kids will catch up if they work harder. Learning to read is more difficult for children who speak a minority dialect in the home, but that is not reflected in classroom practices. By building on science's insights, we can improve how our children read, and take real steps toward solving the inequality that illiteracy breeds. Both an expert look at our relationship with the written word and a rousing call to action, Language at the Speed of Sight is essential for parents, educators, policy makers, and all others who want to understand why so many fail to read, and how to change that.

This homework platform is designed to evaluate and improve student performance and allows instructors to select assignments on specific topics and review the performance of the entire class, as well as individual students, via the instructor dashboard. Students receive immediate feedback on their mastery of the topics, and will be better prepared Language at the Speed of Sight: How We Read, Why So Many Can't, and What Can be Done About it free pdf for lectures and classroom discussions. The user-friendly system provides a convenient way to engage students while assessing progress. Performance data can be used to tailor classroom discussion, activities, and lectures to address students' needs precisely and efficiently. For more information and sample material, visit http://garlandscience.rocketmix.com/. A daring heist and a deadly chase lead Nick and Kate from Washington, D.C., to Shanghai, from the highlands of Scotland to the underbelly of Montreal. But it ll take more than death threats, trained henchmen, sleepless nights, and the fate of a dynasty s priceless heirloom to outsmart Fox and O Hare.

Rachel Kushner: The Flamethrowers

The Flamethrowers

Description

Named a Best Book of 2013 by "The New York Times;" "Vogue;" "O, The Oprah Magazine;" "Time;" "Bookish;" "New York" magazine; "The New Yorker;" "Slate;" "Flavorwire;" "Publishers Weekly;" "Kirkus Reviews;" "Salon;" and "Complex." Rachel Kushner's "The Flamethrowers, "a finalist for" "the National Book Award, was just named a Top Ten Book of 2013 by the "New York Times Book Review" and one of "Time" magazine's top ten fiction books. Kushner's first novel, "Telex from Cuba, "was also a finalist for a National Book Award and was reviewed on the cover of "The New York Times Book Review." "The Flamethrowers," even more ambitious and brilliant, is the riveting story of a young artist and the worlds she encounters in New York and Rome in the mid-1970s--by turns underground, elite, and dangerous. The year is 1975 and Reno--so-called because of the place of her birth--has come to New York intent on turning her fascination with motorcycles and speed into art. Her arrival coincides with an explosion of activity in the art world--artists have colonized a deserted and industrial SoHo, are staging actions in the East Village, and are blurring the line between life and art. Reno meets a group of dreamers and raconteurs who submit her to a sentimental education of sorts. Ardent, vulnerable, and bold, she begins an affair with an artist named Sandro Valera, the semi-estranged scion of an Italian tire and motorcycle empire. When they visit Sandro's family home in Italy, Reno falls in with members of the radical movement that overtook Italy in the seventies. Betrayal sends her reeling into a clandestine undertow. "The Flamethrowers "is an intensely engaging exploration of the mystique of the feminine, the fake, the terrorist. At its center is Kushner's brilliantly realized protagonist, a young woman on the verge. Thrilling and fearless, this is a major American novel from a writer of spectacular talent and imagination.

Henry Reynolds: The Other Side of the Frontier: Aboriginal Resistance to the European Invasion of Australia

The Other Side of the Frontier: Aboriginal Resistance to the European Invasion of Australia

Description

The publication of this book in 1981 profoundly changed the way in which we understand the history of relations between indigenous Australians and European settlers. It has since become a classic of Australian history. Drawing from documentary and oral evidence, the book describes in meticulous and compelling detail the ways in which Aborigines responded to the arrival of Europeans. Henry Reynolds' argument that the Aborigines resisted fiercely was highly original when it was first published and is no less challenging today.

Now, Amy is caught inside an enclosed world where nothing makes sense. Godspeed's 2,312 passengers have forfeited all control to Eldest, a tyrannical and frightening leader. And Elder, Eldest's rebellious teenage heir, is both fascinated with Amy and eager to discover whether he has what it takes to lead. Amy desperately wants to trust Elder. Beyond the Brain: How Body and Environment Shape Animal and Human Minds download book

Louise Barrett: Beyond the Brain: How Body and Environment Shape Animal and Human Minds

Beyond the Brain: How Body and Environment Shape Animal and Human Minds

Description

When a chimpanzee stockpiles rocks as weapons or when a frog sends out mating calls, we might easily assume these animals know their own motivations--that they use the same psychological mechanisms that we do. But as Beyond the Brain indicates, this is a dangerous assumption because animals have different evolutionary trajectories, ecological niches, and physical attributes. How do these differences influence animal thinking and behavior? Removing our human-centered spectacles, Louise Barrett investigates the mind and brain and offers an alternative approach for understanding animal and human cognition. Drawing on examples from animal behavior, comparative psychology, robotics, artificial life, developmental psychology, and cognitive science, Barrett provides remarkable new insights into how animals and humans depend on their bodies and environment--not just their brains--to behave intelligently. Barrett begins with an overview of human cognitive adaptations and how these color our views of other species, brains, and minds. Considering when it is worth having a big brain--or indeed having a brain at all--she investigates exactly what brains are good at. Showing that the brain's evolutionary function guides action in the world, she looks at how physical structure contributes to cognitive processes, and she demonstrates how these processes employ materials and resources in specific environments. Arguing that thinking and behavior constitute a property of the whole organism, not just the brain, Beyond the Brain illustrates how the body, brain, and cognition are tied to the wider world.

This title is available in SmartMusic. In It's About Time, N. David Mermin asserts that relativity ought to be an important part of everyone's education--after all, it is largely about time, a subject with which all are familiar. The book reveals that some of our most intuitive notions about time are shockingly wrong, and that the real nature of time discovered by Einstein can be rigorously explained without advanced mathematics. This readable exposition of the nature of time as addressed in Einstein's theory of relativity is accessible to anyone who remembers a little high school algebra and elementary plane geometry. The book evolved as Mermin taught the subject to diverse groups of undergraduates at Cornell University, none of them science majors, over three and a half decades. Mermin's approach is imaginative, yet accurate and complete. Clear, lively, and informal, the book will appeal to intellectually curious readers of Modelling Railway Stations: A Practical Guide free pdf all kinds, including even professional physicists, who will be intrigued by its highly original approach.

Modelling Railway Stations: A Practical Guide

Description

Have you ever dreamed of building a model of a favourite railway station for your layout, whether it be a modest branch line station, or a large town terminus? Have you ever wanted to re-create a beautiful station that you have seen at a railway modelling exhibition, or in a magazine, and felt that you needed a helping hand? If so, this is the book for you. Ian Lamb, a modeller of enormous experience, demonstrates how almost anybody, regardless of their modelling skills, can construct a pleasing and presentable model railway station in even a quite limited amount of space. Six specific UK stations, some real and some fictional, are selected as modelling case studies and the author provides detailed, practical information about different aspects of their construction. Throughout the book the author provides step-by-step guidance and illustrations and emphasizes how - with patience- modelling skills, confidence and ambition can all be improved over time. Moreover, he is ever mindful of how costs should be kept down to reasonable levels and reveals how materials and tools can often be the most simple and inexpensive of everyday household items.
